U2 World Tour – May God Have Mercy

March 9, 2009 by Dave Parrack

The inevitable has happened – U2 have announced a world tour to support their new album, No Line On The Horizon. Shock. Horror. Surprise. After seemingly being everywhere at once in order to promote the new album, they’re now heading out on the road.

The tour is expected to take in the UK, Europe, and North America. Other territories could then be added at a later date. This is the first chance U2 fans have had to see their heroes up close and personal since the Vertigo tour in 2005/2006.

The tour is set to kick off in Europe, with a huge gig at the Nou Camp Stadium in Barcelona on June 30, 2009. After Europe, U2 will be heading for the United States and beyond. There is expected to be at least 90 dates on the tour once all is said and done.

The shows will all be stadium-only, in order to pack as many paying customers in as possible and ensure the band another bumper payday. The stage will be a 360 degrees set-up ensuring everyone sees the back of Bono’s head at one time or another.

The whole thing is expected to end in the fall, 2010. Which means U2 are coming to a city near you sometime over the next 18 months or so. Joy. If anyone knows a remote village where they are guaranteed not to show up, can you let me know?

You can see where U2 are playing by pointing your browsers at the 360 degrees site. I’m not recommending you do or anything but I suppose I owe it to you to provide a link.

Two questions I have: 1. With a global recession in full swing, is anyone really going to waste their money on tickets to see these middle-aged has-beens strut their stuff? 2. What will Bono be doing to ensure the tour is carbon-friendly? After all, those plane journeys can’t be good for the environment he cares so much about.

Is is just me? When I saw the title of this post, I thought…ugggh, U2-bashing again.

Maybe normally you bash people I don’t like, so it doesn’t bother me as much.

I would love to hear what you’re excited about in the Brit Music Scene!

Actually, maybe I take that back. You were excited about the Brits from what I remember. Not having seen it (not televised here yet) and following it on Twitter (where most people were saying how bad it was) and seeing a few performances online, I couldn’t believe you were enjoying it. Coldplay and U2 performed the same songs they had the previous week at the Grammys. Estelle goes from performing with Kanye West to the Tings Tings. Coldplay after having won Grammys were snubbed by their own country. Elbow (who I love and am excited to see when they open for Coldplay) are OPENING for Coldplay so how do they win Best British Group? seriously! and Girls Aloud was it for single? have never heard them so maybe they’re brilliant…ok maybe not. Sorry didn’t mean to make this into a rant…I guess we have different opinions at the moment. I’m looking forward to getting back in synch with you.

Well, ya know, Parrack’s last two questions have some validity. Carbon emissions and all. Important topic.
