The Human League Are Back… Sort Of

The Human League Greatest HitsIf you’re of a certain age (30 up), you’re at least remember The Human League, although you might not have been a fan.

They formed in 1977 but are best known for being part of the electronic era of the early 1980s. And guess what? They’re back.

To be fair, they haven’t really ever been away, having never split up, but they are setting out on a UK tour and working on new material, which could eventually make up their first album since 2001.

There is however one problem: they don’t have a record deal.

According to NME, the band recently spoke to BBC 6Music about the chances of a releasing a new album. Singer Joanne Catherall said:

“We’ve always been supported by record companies and that’s not really happening to as many groups any more. We’ll have to find another way of getting it out to the public.”

“We’re all keen to put out new music, our only problem is, the way we have traditionally put out music is not available to us any more.”

“It’s quite scary having to think about it, because someone else has sort of run, we make the records, and someone else does everything else for us, and now we’ve got to do it all ourselves, and as everyone knows we’re incredibly slow, and lazy!”

The lack of a record deal may be a blessing in disguise, as assuming they get over their laziness, they could then investigate other means of getting their material out there and in to the public domain. Even if it means giving the album away for free, or as near as damn it, it would help increase their profile massively.

I have fond memories of The Human League from back in the day. There is no better pop record than Don’t You Want Me, although I must admit to not having heard any of their material post-1995 or so.

If they could recapture that 1980s sound while bringing it back up to date then maybe I’d have to break out my new romantic quiff once again.
