Simply Red To Split In 2009… Hooray!

October 25, 2007 by Dave Parrack

Simply Red To Split In 2009… Hooray!Simply Red have announced that they are to split in 2009. I’ll be honest and admit it was kind of a surprise to me that they were even still going!

Lead singer Mick Hucknall has said that current album Stay will be their last, and that they will go their seperate ways after their new tour.

“I’ve kind of decided that the 25 years is going to be enough.”

“I’ve just recorded an album that is a tribute to Bobby Bland, a blues and R&B artist. It’s a solo project and I’ve really enjoyed it - so much that I feel the time has come now to just put a book-end to the [Simply Red] story.”

Is it just me that feels an urge to cheer at the top of my voice? I mean Simply Red were good once, for about 6 months in 1985 when they released Money’s Too Tight (To Mention). But really what have they done since?

They had a bit of a resurgence in ‘89 and then another one in ‘95, but they stopped being relevant at least a decade ago. I’m sure Hucknall (pictured) and the band still has it’s hardcore fans who will roundly rip me to pieces for my views but come on, music has moved on a bit from Mick’s awful caterwauling.

Maybe my headline should have been ‘Simply Red have split up and the whole of the country has a party!

I have to admit that I just don’t like anything I’ve ever heard by Simply Red. I used to work at a cafe and the owner loved to play one of their albums. I hated it! But I’m sure they do have lots of fans.

Wow, their two #1 hits were both covers. How sad.

What the hell have these people been listening to… Simply Red are simply legendary!
You need to go to a live show to really appreciate the quality of their sound. As for what have they done for 25 years…well have you been living on Mars. There are no other bands I can think of that have been completely at the top of their profession over the last 25 years. My advice to the previous reviewers and the sad guy named Dave Parrack, get a life and listen to some real music!
