Mika – ‘We Are Golden’ Music Video Review

September 7, 2009 by Dave Parrack

Wow. One watch of this video is enough to declare Mika is back with a vengeance, more camp, extravagant, and out there than ever. Whether Mika’s return is a good thing depends on whether you’re one of the people who loves him or whether you’re one of the people who hates him. Because this is a man who splits opinion right down the center.

I’m personally split on Mika myself because I’ve liked a lot of his stuff while hating certain tracks, mainly because they were played too often upon release. Maybe a little of the novelty factor has now worn off and this won’t be such a problem this time around.

The new single is called We Are Golden and is the first track from the forthcoming album, The Boy Who Knew Too Much.

Catchy isn’t the word for this song, although ultra-catchy may be getting a little closer to the truth. One listen and it stays with your for hours or even days. The combination of the dance/pop beat and Mika’s deviation between falsetto singing voice and talking style batters the aural center of your brain into submission.

The video is very befitting the song, doing the same to the section of you brain which deals with visuals. Bright colors, lots of movement, and Mika dancing around in his underpants all converge to leave an impression, even if it’s not one you ever wanted to be left with.

Mika’s definitely back and has upped his game in terms of outrageousness. Luckily it makes for a catchy yet ultimately forgettable annoying pop record. Which is exactly what his fans are after. It won’t do anything to change the opinion of the rest of us though.
