Lily Allen – ‘Not Fair’ Music Video Review

April 6, 2009 by Dave Parrack

Lily Allen has her critics. And it’s not really surprising because here is a young girl with a big mouth who says what she thinks about anything and anyone. Thankfully, she also makes excellent music with inspired backing tracks and clever lyrics.

In February I reviewed Lily Allen’s new album, It’s Not Me, It’s You. The album is a veritable smörgåsbord of styles, influences, and inspirations. The Fear was the brilliant first single to be released from this second album. And now the follow-up, Not Fair, has arrived.

This single is a shock the first time you hear it for two very different reasons. First, the country-style track is something of a departure for Ms. Allen. Second, the lyrics tell the tale of a man who is selfish in bed. Putting these two elements together shouldn’t work but it does.

We end up with a song based on the country genre but which includes pop and dance elements as well. Allen’s voice suits the style perfectly so maybe a visit to Nashville is due for Lily. Let’s hope not, one song is good, a whole album based on country would be a little too much.

With the song based around country there was really only one way the video could have gone. And it doesn’t disappoint. We get to see Lily as a 1970s-style country singer performing on television with her redneck-looking backing group.

The song does lack the little sparkle which would have taken it from being good to great but it ultimately works well as a single. It’s also a good indicator of what the album is like so if you like this you’ll love It’s Not Me, It’s You.

Song: 7/10
Video: 7/10

  1. Dinah says:

Typical B, “says what she wants” and that’s okay. Most chicks want to say what they want but they censor themselves. Scared to hurt anyone, even though they get hurt all the time by others. Shit, might as well sling some of it back to the source. Gotta get some of this muzak, get in the flow.
