Coco Sumner Is A Star In The Making | Sting’s Daughter Wows In ‘I Blame Coco’

July 19, 2008 by Dave Parrack

Being the offspring of a famous celebrity is a double-edged sword: it can help you forge your own career in the world of entertainment purely by people knowing your name, or it can make you subject to unfair comparisons, and accusations of getting an unfair advantage.

A high percentage of celebrities offspring choose to follow their parents choice of career, and with wildly different outcomes. One who seems to be doing well at it is Coco Sumner, real name Eliot Pauline Sumner, who is the daughter of Sting from The Police, and Trudie Styler.

She performed an intimate gig at the Boogaloo bar in North London with her band, I Blame Coco, as part of the Trekstock event, and seems to have wowed everyone with her talent. Which is nice to hear after we’ve been subjected to Peaches Geldof trying, and failing to forge a career as a singer, and DJ.

Coco played an acoustic set, which according to Hello magazine, included a cover of Estelle’s American Boy. She also performed a song called My Name’s Not Sting, an obvious attempt at distancing herself from her famous father.

There were a number of other famous faces at the gig, no doubt to see if Coco has inherited her father’s musical abilities, and distinctive voice. Celebrities present included Sadie Frost, Mighty Boosh star Noel Fielding and former Libertine Carl Barat.

The 17 year old Coco is preparing to record her début album in Jamaica, an album thought to be heavily influenced by reggae. And if the views of anyone who saw this gig are anything to go by, it, and she, are due to be massive.

Hopefully, Coco has also inherited Sting’s common sense, and won’t follow young artists such as Amy Winehouse, and Pete Doherty (who she regularly hangs out with) down the route of using drugs. The signs are good as she is said to have only taken one thing on stage with her… a nice cup of tea to sip.

  1. I like the huskiness in her voice. It’s almost masculine in the same way Nina Simone’s voice was.
