Everyone who is in the public eye or who has any dealings with the public is sometimes going to come face-to-face with haters. Just ask any traffic warden, policeman, or humble blogger such as myself. The difference is how you handle it; some people clearly can’t.

Take Dappy from N-Dubz, the one who always wears the stupid hats. Who, it has emerged, sent a non-fan a death threat after she criticized him and N-Dubz when they appeared on The Chris Moyles Show on Radio 1.

According to BBC News, Chloe Moody sent a text calling N-Dubz “losers” and describing Dappy as “vile”, “repulsive”, and “a little boy with a silly hat”. Which clearly isn’t nice but is surely par for the course. N-Dubz have a lot of fans, but they also have a lot of haters. So what, deal with it.

Unfortunately, Dappy dealt with it by noting down Moody’s mobile number and ringing and texting her the next day. The text read:

“Your [sic] gonna die. U sent a very bad msg towards Ndubz on The Chris Moyels [sic] Show yesterday Morning and for that reason u will never be left alone!!! If u say sorry I will leave you alone.”

Dappy then rang her ranting and raving.

Now the story has come out in the open, Dappy has apologized for his behavior, saying:

“”I totally apologize to Chloe. I called her in the heat of the moment when I was angry, but that is no excuse for my behavior. I’m genuinely sorry. I’d also like to send my sincerest apologies to Radio 1.”

The only lasting damage seems to be N-Dubz having been dropped from a Government campaign against cyber-bullying over mobile phones and the Internet. Oh, and I’ve lost any respect I once had for the band. Which wasn’t much to begin with, if I’m honest.

This week’s albums chart also saw something of an upset with JLS beating the returning Robbie Williams to number one. The former (and maybe future) Take That star has to settle for number two. Snow Patrol’s latest Up To Now entered at number three while Cheryl Cole saw a huge drop-off from number one to seven. The brilliant Biffy Clyro entered at number eight with Only Revolutions.

Although a lot of people may hate N-Dubz and think their music is rubbish, their reputation is growing and their rise to the top doesn’t look like stopping anytime soon. After a string of hits, a bestselling album, and a couple of MOBO awards, the London hip-hop, grime outfit are set to spread their wings a little.

Whether you like them or not you have to give N-Dubz credit for what they’ve achieved. And they’re set to achieve a lot more in the future, especially with other big name artists queuing up to collaborate with them.

Richard ‘Fazer’ Rawson recently spoke to BBC Newsbeat about working on a new track with Take That’s Gary Barlow. He said:

“We’ve done a big tune with Gary Barlow. We’re not narrow minded you get me, we can make big tunes, and we can make massive hooks, big concepts that’s why we’ve got Gary Barlow in.”

“It ain’t Take That, it’s Take Braaaap. Legend… He came in the studio and it was great – he had time for the underdogs and he came and wrote a smashing hook.”

And a collaboration with Australian pop tartlet Kylie Minogue seems to be next on the agenda:

“Something will actually come out of this – the negotiations are almost done and there should be a track with Kylie and N-Dubz and it’ll be a smash.”

It probably will be as well. N-Dubz have already enjoyed chart success with one collaboration, when they appeared on Tinchy Stryder’s number one, aptly titled Number One. And I suspect these collaborations will also foster more hits in the future. After all, both Gary Barlow and Kylie Minogue are big stars with lots of fans. Talk about aligning yourself with big hitters.

This year’s Mobo Awards were held at the SECC in Glasgow. The night saw some deserving winners but some sadly overlooked artists missing out, especially Dizzee Rascal and Tinchy Stryder, both of whom have had incredible success over the past 12 months.

2009 Mobo Awards Winners

Best UK Act: N-Dubz
Best Newcomer: JLS
Best Song: ‘Beat Again’ – JLS
Best Album: ‘Uncle B’ – N-Dubz
Best DJ: Trevor Nelson
Best Hip Hop: Chipmunk
Best R&B: Keri Hilson
Best International: Beyoncé
Best Video: ‘Single Ladies’ – Beyoncé
Best Reggae: Sean Paul
Best Jazz: Yolanda Brown
Best Gospel: Victizzle
Best African Act: Nneka

JLS, runners-up of The X Factor, N-Dubz, and Beyonce all won big, taking home two Mobo Awards. However, Beyonce isn’t British and couldn’t be bothered to turn up on the night so we’ll ignore her. Except to say that I suspect Kanye West will be happy to see she won Best Video for Single Ladies. Then again, Taylor Swift wasn’t nominated.

As well as the controversy surrounding the winners (and who missed out), there were also sound problems which upset both Tinchy Stryder and Kelly Rowland. The latter bemoaned the problem on her Twitter page straight after the show.

N-Dubz aren’t my favorite group in the world, or even in the U.K., but they are growing on me and I do have a grudging respect for their music and how they’ve become hugely successful. The group are currently working on a follow-up to their debut album, Uncle B, and preparing to play the Wireless Festival in London in July.

Last month, while N-Dubz were riding high in the charts with their collaboration with Tinchy Stryder, Number 1, Tulisa was rushed to hospital with suspected swine flu. It turned out to be nothing of the sort, and she actually just had the regular sniffles which most of us get a few times a year. But it gave the group some nice publicity, which is never a bad thing.

In an interview with BBC Newsbeat, where she also spoke about being back in the studio writing songs for the group’s second album, and having to spend every day with Dappy and Fazer, Tulisa spoke about the prospect of playing the Wireless Festival in Hyde Park. She, and hopefully her band mates as well, seem to truly understand what’s required to do well at a festival.

She said:

“I like festivals because I find them a challenge. You’ve got thousands of people there and they’re not all there to see you.”

“It’s about winning the people over who are there to see a different act and making them walk away saying, ‘I went there to see so and so, but you know what, I really loved the N-Dubz performance.’”

“It’s just a wicked vibe to have that many people in one place – performing for them.”

Tulisa clearly has her head screwed on right because that is exactly how every band should approach an upcoming festival. There’s no point turning up and expecting everyone in the crowd to be there to see you, because a large proportion of them won’t be. So it’s a case of going out on stage and giving it your all, knowing you may be adding some new fans in the process.

Maybe I should force myself to listen to some more N-Dubz material. No, not as punishment for my sins but because it may do this 32-year-old some good to listen to what the kids love these days with an open mind. Am I too old to accept new music into my life? Probably not, but the chav genre may be pushing it a little.
