We’ve already detailed what the top 10 singles and albums of the noughties were, but now it’s time to see what the top-selling singles and albums of 2009 were. Sales figures for the year have also been released today, and that brings mixed tidings.

Overall, album sales in the UK were down by around 3.5 percent to 128.9 million, continuing a longterm trend which the music industry blames on illegal file-sharing. 16.1 million of this total were legal downloads.

At least temporarily. Lily Allen has had a strange last few months. She set a blog up against filesharing, then deleted it after some critical comments. She then allegedly claimed to be quitting music, with acting and record label ambitions coming to the fore, and then also quit the Internet and technology altogether!

Lily Allen has never been afraid to voice her opinions on all manner of subjects, some close to her heart. Earlier this year she started a blog about illegal filesharing and copyright infringement. But she walked away from the debate in September, deleting her blog as she went.

That doesn’t, however, mean that she has suddenly stopped caring about the subject. Although she does seem a little mixed up with her views on how her music is shared over the Internet and burned on to pirate CDs.

The Children In Need 2009 charity concert took place last night at the Royal Albert Hall in central London. The stage was set for Take That and Robbie Williams to reunite and perform together, and there was speculation that this was exactly what would happen. And it kind of did, but not really.

There have been rumors of a Take That/Robbie Williams reunion taking place for months now, and the Children In Need concert seemed to be the perfect opportunity. In the end, Robbie and Take That shared the stage twice but didn’t actually reunite.

Well there’s a turn-up for the books. There we all were thinking Lily Allen was retiring from music, moving out of the media spotlight, and leaving her fans to stew on Twitter and MySpace. But it seems this isn’t strictly true.
